Bergen as a historical city has a lot to offer, and on this sightseeing we give you a thorough introduction.

More information about the tour

Your departure point for this sightseeing is at the Tourist Information Office, view map.  Onboard the coach you will explore the centre of Bergen where we drive by the Wharf which is on UNESCO's World Heritage list, St. Mary Church, the University area and many other historical and beautiful locations. Afterwards the tour continues to Gamlehaugen which is the residence of the Norwegian Royal Family when visiting Bergen. Gamlehaugen was built by the politician and shipping magnate Christian Michelsen in 1900. He demolished the original building, and ordered the construction of a new castle like villa. The new villa was built in a Scottish baronial style castle by the architect Jens Zetlitz Monrad Kielland, who later also drew the Railway Station in Bergen. After the death of Michelsen the state bought the property.

The sightseeing continues to Troldhaugen where Edward Grieg lived for 22 years. This wonderful villa is made of wood in an architectural style related to the gothic, renaissance and baroque. Grieg himself called the building “my most important composition” and his wife named the villa Trold meaning “Troll” and Haug meaning “small hill”.

There was in 1985 built a small concert hall on the property, and below the concert hall is Grieg’s small Composer’s hut. Troldhaugen was very dear to Grieg, and in one of Grieg’s piano pieces he immortalized the name of his home “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen”, Opus 65, No.6.

After visiting Troldhaugen the sightseeing continues to the centre of Bergen where it ends.

A taped commentary in 7 languages is played on the coach. At Troldhaugen we will go for a guided tour with one of the museum guides.
